Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
The objective of SDG 15 is to protect terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity. It aims to combat desertification, halt land degradation, and ensure sustainable forest management. The goal recognizes the vital role of land ecosystems in supporting life on Earth.
- Ensure the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, mountains, and dry lands, by 2020 in accordance with international agreements.
- Promote sustainable forest management by 2020, stopping deforestation, restoring degraded forests, and substantially increasing global afforestation and reforestation.
- Combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, and strive for a land degradation-neutral world by 2030.
- Conserve mountain ecosystems and biodiversity by 2030 to enhance their capacity for sustainable development.
- Urgently reduce natural habitat degradation, halt biodiversity loss, and protect threatened species by 2020.
- Ensure fair sharing of benefits from genetic resources and facilitate international access as agreed upon.
- Take immediate action to end poaching and trafficking of protected flora and fauna, addressing both demand and supply of illegal wildlife products.
- Implement measures by 2020 to prevent and significantly reduce the impact of invasive alien species on land and water ecosystems.
- Integrate ecosystem and biodiversity values into national and local planning, development processes, and poverty reduction strategies by 2020.
- Mobilize increased financial resources from all sources to conserve biodiversity and ecosystems.
- Secure significant resources at all levels to finance sustainable forest management, including conservation and reforestation in developing countries.
- Strengthen global support against poaching and trafficking of protected species, empowering local communities for sustainable livelihoods.
